Oregon Homeschool Science Club (OHSC) offers classes and events from Kindergarten through high school. Science levels overlap by grades to give flexibility to parents wanting to challenge their child, or to accommodate students warming up to science or traditional classroom structure.
Science classes are on Tuesdays; 10 am, 11:15, or 1:00 pm. Classes run on a fall/spring schedule, 12 weeks each term. Some students opt to take two classes, for example at 10 am and an 11:15 class. There is a two class limit.

• Discovery K/1st — Classes tend to be very hands on exploration with class topics rotating every two weeks. Topics tend to cover bugs, nutrition, structures, electricity, engineering, magnifying glasses, human body, weather, volcanoes, sound waves, magnets and electricity, simple machines, and simple chemistry experiments.
• Beginner 2nd/3rd — These science classes will explore Earth Science, Life Science, Astronomy, Paleontology, and alternating years of Chemistry/Physics. Classes are a mixture of hands on and more short presentation with lots of group discussion. Light reading and writing skills, and no homework.
• Science Exploration 1-3rd These classes dive into a rotation of science labs in a weekly rotation of the various branches of science. Classes are set up with presentation, stations, and wrap up.
Intermediate 3rd/4th and Advanced 5th — 7th — These classes are similar in topic, but the content and objectives deepen with the older students. Students will rotate through Physics, Chemistry, Earth, Astronomy, and Life Science labs. There is some overlap between Intermediate and Advanced, in areas that need repetition for mastery and comprehension.
• Middle School Challenge 7th/8th/9th grade — This class focuses on 8th grade state standards in Biology and Chemistry. Classes will work in a real chemistry lab to solve challenges, or operate various high powered microscopes in lab research. Students meet for two hours each week, have some engaging take home assignments, are expected to work as teams and independently, and contribute to group discussion and presentations. There is no text book, however students are expected to be able to take notes or keep a science journal.
MS STEM Lab (7-9th grade): Past semesters have included — Lemelson-MIT JVInvenTeams curriculum; Electronic Textiles; and Shoe Sole Design.
TEAMS Arch/Engineering (3rd-5th grades) and Design Tech (5th–8th grades) classes are Team building challenging activities. Each year courses are selected from the options of Lego Engineering, IMAGINEERING, Lego Robotics, Nano Technology, Submarine exploration, and other fun classes that students have requested. Food Science is a branch of study that affects us all in very personal ways. People rarely, if ever, have the opportunity to learn about where food comes from, what it contains, and the importance of making healthy choices. This class covers the basics of what food is, how and why we eat, how food is grown, and how it affects our bodies. This series ends with a research project deconstructing a fad diet.
Designing Our World (DOW)
Classes range in size from 14 to 18 students, plus auditing parents. Since OMSI instructors see our kids on a regular basis and develop a relationship with each class, the instructors have the ability (and our encouragement) to go deeper with each lesson. Our kids love to be in science classes and leave with answers and the desire for more questions.
Throughout the year many new families ask to join. It is always hard to say that classes are full at 18 students, but when the new families join, they always appreciate the not-too-small, not-too-large groups.
1) Families need to purchase an OMSI museum pass. OMSI offers a homeschool membership by presenting your membership name tag at the OMSI membership desk during our Science Tuesdays or at the opening science assembly.
2) Non-refundable registration fee of $25. Registered families are invited to join the Opening Science Assemblies, End of Term Empirical Films, and to register for any special events offered through the email announcements.
3) Fall/Full Year Tuition is due August 1st. Tuition is refundable up to August 15th. Un-refundable tuition goes to course development and assemblies.
Spring only tuition is due December 1st and is refundable up to December 10th.
